A historical record: the construction firm that built, between 1944 and 1948, one of the most important residential buildings of São Paulo modernism.
Who it is
Barreto, Xande & Cia. is the name of the construction firm responsible for executing Prudência, on Avenida Higienópolis, designed by Rino Levi and Roberto Cerqueira César for Prudência e Capitalização S.A. and completed in 1948. The attribution appears both in the technical record of the Brazilian architecture archive and in the academic thesis from FAU-USP that studied the building in depth.
This is a historical record page. There is no sign of contemporary operation by the company: no website, no locatable active registration, no recent work. Everything indicates the firm has been defunct for decades — but the house has not found the document that records its closure, and therefore does not state it. Founding date, headquarters, partners and the rest of the portfolio remain blank.

- Prudência (Higienópolis) — 1944–1948. A nine-storey “U”-shaped block with 38 apartments, a 3,942 m² plot and 17,135 m² of built area, with gardens and tile panels by Burle Marx. It is a building listed by CONPRESP since 1994 and appears in the canonical bibliography of Brazilian modern architecture, from Mindlin to Bruand.
