Studio Serradura

A São Paulo lighting-design studio that treats light as the material of the project: from the fitting designed piece by piece to façade lighting.

Who they are

Studio Serradura was founded in January 2007, in São Paulo, by lighting designer Rafael Serradura. He entered lighting design in 2003, still in the second year of his Architecture and Urban Planning degree, interning at the practice of Antônio Carlos Mingrone — the mentor he still cites today. He opened his first office in partnership in 2005, while still a student, and went solo from 2007, with one client. In 2012 he repositioned the brand, with a concept the house sums up in a working phrase: “create, recreate, develop, inspire, breathe, live, build, escape the obvious, enjoy yourself.”

The studio works on three fronts: architectural lighting — façades, interiors, landscaping, artworks and certification —, stage lighting — music, theatre, dance, exhibitions and launches — and industrial design, developing technical and decorative fittings. It offers two types of consultancy, lighting architecture and lighting design, and develops each solution bespoke.

In the archive, it signs the lighting design of O Parque Brooklin, in Brooklin.

Aesthetic

  • Language: light as the building of the environment — the studio works from the principle that lighting builds or negates a space, and that details imperceptible by day only exist at night if someone has designed them. Boldness combined with functionality.
  • Materials and hallmarks: exclusive fittings designed for the project, multiple scene systems within the same environment, façade and landscape lighting integrated with the architecture.
  • Awards and publications: 2nd place (Shops) and 3rd place (Residential) at the VI Abilux Lighting Design Award, 2011; 3rd place (Shops) at the V Abilux Award, 2009; 11th place at the II Lafarge Gypsum Interior Architecture Award, 2009. Featured on the cover of Lume Arquitetura magazine three times.
