Port Cannes

History

Port Cannes is a single-tower residential building erected on the upper part of Jardim Américai, on the stretch of Alameda Ministro Rocha Azevedoi that runs down towards Rua Oscar Freirei. The oldest public record of the condominium points to 1986 — the decade in which the neighbourhood traded houses for large-apartment towers, and when the São Paulo market still drew three-hundred-metre plans as the standard, not the exception.

• Concept: the wide 1980s floor plan — four bedrooms in 308 m², in a single block, without the squeeze on floor area that came later.
• Curiosities: the French name is no accident. The same avenue and the neighbouring streets bring together a sequence of buildings named after Europe and the Americas — Ville de France, L’Ermitage, Canadá, Caracas —, the mark of a generation of developments that sold the address through the imagery of travel.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single block, in the construction grammar São Paulo practised in the 1980s: it is the floor plan that gives the storey its thickness, and the façade follows from it, repeated without variation floor after floor. The break comes at the top — the penthouse takes up two storeys and moves the pool onto the terrace, and it is the only stretch where the building stops repeating itself. The architectural design credit is not publicly documented and is therefore not attributed here.

Jardim América: the address

Jardim Américai is São Paulo’s first garden suburb and the birthplace of the logic that today defines the city’s high end: blocks laid out in the early twentieth century, mandatory setbacks, protected tree cover and low height limits. Alameda Ministro Rocha Azevedoi crosses the neighbourhood towards Avenida Paulistai and is one of the few streets in the area that brings together, within the same kilometre, large residential buildings, street-level shops and the walk to Rua Oscar Freirei. An address in the middle of everything: central without being noisy, residential without being isolated.
