The neighbourhood’s story
Mangaratiba is not a neighbourhood: it is a municipality on the southern Rio de Janeiro coast, neighbouring Angra dos Reis, and it is through it that one enters the Costa Verde coming from Rio. Its position is its main asset — it lies about 110 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro and 380 from São Paulo, which makes it the most balanced point on the axis for those with a weekend home who travel from both cities.
The geography repeats that of the whole Costa Verde: the Serra do Mar descends to the water, the Atlantic Forest covers the slopes, and the bay opens onto Ilha Grande. Mangaratiba’s difference lies in the scale of its properties. Here, some coastal estates reached the twenty-first century intact and were converted into large-scale private destinations, with their own beach, navigable canals, a marina and even a licensed airstrip — as is the case of Portobello Mangaratiba, created from the resort Carlos Jardim Borges founded in 1987.
As in the rest of the Costa Verde, what sustains value is the impossibility of repetition: the environmental legislation protecting the Serra do Mar and the bay no longer allows the licensing of developments of this scale on the coast. What exists is what exists.

- Parks: the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar and the bay of Ilha Grande, with the islands and coves of the Angra arc.
