The neighbourhood’s story
Paraty is not a neighbourhood: it is a municipality on the southern Rio de Janeiro coast, bordering São Paulo state, and it closes off the Costa Verde on the opposite side from Angra dos Reis. A colonial town born of the gold cycle, it was the port through which Minas Gerais’ production was shipped to Portugal — and it is from that era that the cobblestone streets and mansions date, forming one of the best-preserved colonial architectural ensembles in Brazil, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For the top-end market, Paraty functions as a natural extension of the Angra nautical arc: the coves along this stretch are the best preserved in the bay, and sailing between the two towns is short and sheltered. The town has also built up, over recent decades, a rare cultural capital for the Brazilian coast, with a literary and gastronomic calendar that attracts a specific audience — the buyer who wants the sea, but also wants a town.
