Architecture and aesthetics

A single tower, slender and tall for the standard of the street: twenty storeys on a 1,169 m² plot, on a block where the immediate neighbours top out between twelve and eighteen floors. The layout is classic for its vintage: a base with the lobby and leisure amenities, a set-back tower, two lifts — social and service — and large-slab flats, the kind São Paulo stopped building once the square metre in the Jardinsi and in Higienópolis became worth more subdivided. The three top floors form a single unit: the first two connected by two internal staircases and served by the lifts, the third reachable only by stairs — a solution that turns the penthouse into a building within the building. The project’s authorship is not publicly documented and, for that reason, is not attributed here.

Higienópolis: the address

Higienópolisi is the neighbourhood São Paulo built when it still thought the city would age well — and which, to a great extent, it did. Rua Doutor Gabriel dos Santos runs between Avenida Angélica and Rua Baronesa de Itu, in a stretch of residential towers from the 1960s to the 1980s that the neighbourhood absorbed without losing its street-level scale: bakery, pharmacy and school within walking distance, with Parque Buenos Airesi and Shopping Pátio Higienópolisi at the end of the walk. It is also one of the central addresses of São Paulo’s Jewish community — and the building answers to that with a Shabbat lift, a detail that does not appear in any brochure but explains who lives here. Hospital Sírio-Libanêsi, Colégio FAAPi, Mackenzie and Avenida Paulistai are minutes away; Estação Santa Cecíliai and Estação FAAP-Pacaembui cover the metro in both directions. At the post office, the postcode for this block reads Santa Cecília — the neighbourhood is read, sold and lived as Higienópolis.
