Infinity Coast Tower

History

The Infinity Coast Tower was completed in 2019 by FGi (FG Empreendimentos) and, at 234.8 metres tall, became upon delivery the tallest building ever built in Brazil — according to the trade press itself, the tallest in the country for that period. Those responsible for the project publicly stated that they had no deliberate intention of erecting the country’s tallest building; the record was a consequence of the scale that Balneário Camboriúi had come to adopt as the norm.

It is the third link in a documented chain of records: it took the top spot from the Millennium Palacei (2014), which had in turn succeeded the Ocean Palacei (2012); and it ceded it to the next generation — the One Toweri (2022) and the Yachthouse by Pininfarinai (2023) —, in the race that culminates, under construction, in the Senna Toweri, designed to be the tallest residential building in the world.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single residential reinforced-concrete tower, with a glass skin. The design follows the same regulatory logic that sculpted Balneário Camboriúi‘s skyline: the payment for additional building rights converts extra height into a contribution to the municipality, and the front setback grows with elevation — the shadow cone, calculated from an angle drawn off the axis of Avenida Atlântica, narrows the tower as it rises and produces the slender prow characteristic of the seafront skyscrapers. The rule capping the maximum number of units per plot ratio pushes the product toward large flats and few units per floor.

Balneário Camboriú: the address

Balneário Camboriúi is not a neighbourhood: it is the Santa Catarina city that turned vertical development into an economic project and ended up with the most recognisable skyline on the Brazilian coast — an unbroken wall of towers facing a crescent-shaped beach. FGi concentrated there the generation of skyscrapers that made the city the country’s largest hub of residential towers, with successive national height records. Density has a price — the wall of towers casts a shadow over the sand in the late afternoon, and what can be built in front of it is a permanent political issue in the city.
