Hans Nobiling

History

The building’s name comes from the street, and the street comes from a German. Hans Nobilingi (Hamburg, 1877 — Rio de Janeiro, 1954) landed in São Paulo in 1897 with a football and the statutes of his Hamburg club in his luggage; in 1899 he founded Sport Club Germânia, which crossed the century, changed its name twice and today is Esporte Clube Pinheirosi. In the late 1950s the road that cuts through the club’s grounds was given his name, and it is from that condition — a residential street backing onto one of the country’s largest multi-sport clubs — that the block drew its value. The building belongs to the wave that turned this stretch into high-rises at the turn of the 1960s into the 1970s. The authorship of the project is not publicly documented and, for that reason, is not attributed here.

• Concept: a handful of units in a single tower, facing a private green area that no future development can occupy.
• Trivia: the address is self-referential — the street bears the name of the man who founded the club whose pitch it skirts, and Praça Germâniai, right next door, keeps the club’s original name. It is one of the rare cases in São Paulo where the block’s toponymy tells the whole story of the neighbour across the street.

Architecture and aesthetics

Single tower, low-density layout, discreet architecture from the batch that turned Jardim Europai into high-rises at the end of the 1960s. The gesture that defines the building is not the façade: it is the orientation. Facing the grounds of Esporte Clube Pinheirosi, the building solved the most expensive question in São Paulo’s high-end market — the permanent view — through siting, not height. The larger units occupy the rooftop, as duplexes. Neither the architectural project nor the interior and landscape design projects are credited in a reliable source.

Jardim Europa: the address

Jardim Europai is the garden neighbourhood São Paulo built so as not to be seen up close: curved streets, wide frontages, mandatory setbacks and tree cover that was already mature when the first buildings arrived. Rua Hans Nobiling occupies the rarest fringe of that design — it runs between the residential core and the grounds of Esporte Clube Pinheirosi, which gives the block a condition the rest of the neighbourhood does not have: a large, green, permanent neighbour. From there, Avenida Cidade Jardimi, Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Limai and Shopping Iguatemii are within a few minutes, without the traffic of those roads entering the street.
