Fernanda Marques
A multidisciplinary architect with a clean, contemporary and intimate style: the name behind award-winning interiors from Malibu to London.
Who she is
Born in São Paulo in 1965 and a 1988 graduate of FAU-USP, Fernanda Marques has run Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados since 1992, now based in Vila Olímpia. The studio moves in an integrated way between architecture, interiors and product design, faithful to a single style: clean and contemporary, in tune with the best of international art and design. Although she began with residential architecture, she became better known for interiors, her expertise of more than three decades. She names Brazilian brutalism and Paulo Mendes da Rocha as major influences.
Aesthetic
- Language: clean, contemporary and intimate, with a neutral colour palette and striking details to avoid feeling dated. Near-sculptural staircases are a recurring signature.
- Materials and signatures: heavy use of timber and the contrast between warm and cool points (different woods and stones), with curated international art and design. She also designs her own line of furniture and finishes.
- Awards and publications: Prêmio Espaço D (2002), A’ Design Awards, iF Awards and Americas Property Awards, with a portfolio published inside and outside the country.
