Architecture and aesthetics

Unabashedly neoclassical, in the language that Adolpho Lindenbergi defended his whole life against modernist hegemony and that the market came to call the Lindenberg style: symmetry, classical elegance and noble materials, in a 2007 building. What makes the decision possible is the plot — over three thousand square metres and nearly seventy metres of frontage, a remnant of a house-sized scale that barely exists any more in this part of the neighbourhood. Jardim América: the address

Two names for the same address

The plot sits on the border between Jardim América and Cerqueira César, and both names are legitimate. The postcode registers Cerqueira César; the high-end market treats the address as Jardim América. This entry adopts the name in common use and keeps the other for anyone searching by it.

Jardim Américai is the original garden-suburb of the Companhia City, laid out at the start of the twentieth century by Barry Parker over large plots, set-back houses and tree-lined streets. Rua Doutor Melo Alves runs along the stretch where that layout meets the grid of Cerqueira Césari — the neighbourhood registered by the postcode, and the same address that São Paulo’s high end treats as Jardim América. The advantage of the stretch is measured in blocks: two to Rua Oscar Freirei, under three hundred metres to Estação Oscar Freirei, Cavallieri Colégioi at the same distance and the Avenida Doutor Arnaldoi Sunday market one block away. And the legacy of the large plot lies in this building’s own land: it is what left, so close to the shops, a plot big enough for a tennis court — in the already subdivided blocks nearby, that can no longer be redone.
