João Armentano

One of the great names of Brazilian high-end design, with four decades on the road: the architect and decorator for whom luxury is warmth, not opulence.

Who he is

A São Paulo native who graduated from Faculdade Brás Cubas in the late 1980s, João Armentano opened his own firm, J. Armentano Arquitetura, in 1987, after a period of partnership with Roberto Migotto. Over more than three decades, he has moved between architecture, interior design and object design, always with a strong sense of authorship. He likes to say that luxury lies not in size or opulence but in comfort and warmth, and that his method is to enter the client’s dream in order to translate it, without imposing his own. He was the subject of an episode of the documentary series Insight (on Brazilian architects) and cites Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Niemeyer as references.

Aesthetic

  • Language: modern, sensitive, at once simple and sophisticated, with clean lines and plenty of natural light. A strong use of colour and elements from nature.
  • Materials and brands: sophisticated finishes, award-winning furniture design and materials of natural beauty (wood, stone), with bold solutions.
  • Awards and publications: Espaço D, Deca and Formaplas, among others; a recurring presence at Casa Cor.

Signed projects

  • Interiors of the Hotel Unique, São Paulo (the award-winning Oasis suite, on the architecture of Ruy Ohtake).
  • Hotel Jequitimar, Guarujá, and the Hotel Carmel Taíba, in Ceará.
  • Vizcaya Itaim and various high-end residences in São Paulo, Rio, Campos do Jordão and Angra dos Reis.
