Piazza di Spagna

History

Piazza di Spagna is one of the buildings that close the ring around Praça Pereira Coutinhoi, the core around which the whole of Vila Nova Conceiçãoi is organised. It belongs to a small lineage of Italian names that appeared on the square and in the neighbouring blocks throughout the 1980s — the Piazza Navona, at number 202 on the same square, and the Piazza San Marco, on Rua Brás Cardoso. Neighbourhood sources attribute the construction to the builder Concyb, the same one that signed the Piazza Navona; until a second confirmation appears, this entry does not fix the credit. Nor does it fix the year: records diverge between 1985 and 1986, and the house prefers to leave the date blank rather than publish the wrong one.

• Concept: the large four-bedroom floor plan with four parking spaces, facing the only real square in Vila Nova Conceição.
• Curiosities: the building has its own postcode with the Post Office — 04510-901, distinct from the square’s postcode —, a mark of a building large enough to receive mail in bulk. And the officially registered name differs from the street name: the Post Office records the unit as “Edifício Piazza Spagna”, without the di that the condominium uses.

Architecture and aesthetics

A single tower over the square, from the mid-1980s crop of Vila Nova Conceiçãoi — the moment when the neighbourhood traded houses for buildings with few units and large floor areas, before the contemporary wave. The architectural credit is not documented in any public source and is not attributed here.

Vila Nova Conceição: the address

Vila Nova Conceiçãoi is small and self-contained, and that is what defines it: tree-lined streets, little commerce, little noise, and a resident who has chosen discretion over display. The neighbourhood is organised around Praça Pereira Coutinhoi — a whole block of green space with a walking track of around 450 metres on flat ground, jabuticaba, jackfruit and mango trees, and a small playground, plus a restaurant, a café, a pharmacy and a newsstand that has been there for almost twenty years. Living opposite it is the local equivalent of having a garden: no one builds in front of it, the green space is permanent, and the view is guaranteed by law. Parque Ibirapuerai is within reach of a longer walk, Avenida Santo Amaroi handles the route out to the rest of the city, and Itaim Bibii and Vila Olímpiai — where a good part of those who live here work — are right next door.
